WYD Update #6: The Wrap-up!

WORLD YOUTH DAY!

Monday, we left our host families in Wollongong to journey on to Sydney where all of the World Youth Day festivities would take place. We filed in buses and stopped for Mass for about an hour in at a beautiful Marian shrine. Our priests on this pilgrimage were so cognizant in making Mass a daily experience. Our priest in Kiama during Days in the Diocese showed up to celebrate with us! I guess he missed us! We had Mass the couple days after WYD was over, too, in the Dome. We were able to do music for those and also for a Holy Hour - at the Dome!!

Saying goodbye to our host families was difficult, but we all know we've got a place to stay should we ever return!

I was having a pretty difficult time - overwhelmed by many things and feeling an unexplainable sadness. At Mass that day, I prayed that God would show me what was going on with me, and why I was feeling the way I was... He said to me, in prayer, that this is the cross that I will have to bear and to offer it up for the intentions of my benefactors. Then --- lo and behold! - the readings for that day spoke of taking up our crosses! Even though I was still having a difficult time, I felt peace in suffering what little bit I could for my benefactors' intentions. I hope the Lord will let me see some answered prayers!

Monday afternoon we arrived at "The Dome" at Olympic Stadium. We slept in rows on the concrete floor on little bitty mats. This wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the Information Center making announcements over the loud speaker every 15 minutes beginning at 6am and ending at 11:30pm!

In the evening we walked to Darling Harbour and the magnificence of the sunset and the lights reflecting off the water took my breath away. We ate dinner with some of our group and enjoyed the last bit of fellowship we were to have with most of our group as David, Dawn, Alicia and I would be running to and fro the rest of the week!

Tuesday, we slept in a smidge, then rode the train into town. We saw the remains of Blessed Pier Georgio Frassatti at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Cathedral was set up in a pathway where you could follow a quote and timeline of Blessed Frasatti's life. It was very moving. I didn't know much about him before we went to Australia, but what a great life he led - of sacrifice and charity. A great role model for youth and young adults! Pausing at his coffin, I felt inspired to pray a decade of the Rosary and reflect on the Mystery of the Resurrection. I realized that there are parts of my life that need to be resurrected and given over to our Lord. I wish I could go into my spiritual experience more, but I haven't fully digested everything yet... I was under quite a bit of attack, internally! These little prayer revelations were a great source of comfort and strength to me.

Tuesday afternoon we were able to meet John Angotti and his band to practice for my concert on Wednesday at Palm Grove. We improvised using pillows for drums and acoustic guitar for bass and air/misc mouth noises for keyboard! :) That was a good time! The guys are crazy talented and picked up the songs right away.

In the evening we went to the opening Mass. We couldn't see very well, from where we were, and it was FREEZING cold, but despite that, there was a hush and a reverence that I cannot describe but to say, "Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place!"

Wednesday -
On our way to the catechetical session and I have no idea where it is and I have no idea what we're supposed to do when we get there. I knew two things, though - one, we have an address, and two, we are late! I call our animator to see if she can give us directions. I prayed, OKAY Holy Spirit, lead the way! This is in Your hands! Lo and behold (again!)! Our animator is on our train!!! She waited for us to alight and took us on a fifteen minute walk from the train station to our site! Praise Him!

We began the morning with praise music and our group was amazing! There were a few hundred kids there and all of them were actively singing, praying, laughing, worshiping our Lord! These catechetical sessions were our favorite ministry experience.

Unfortunately, the first day we had to leave early because I had to be back (an hour and a half away) to Palm Grove for my concert. The concert went great! We had a great crowd and groups from my hometown, Memphis, showed up to lend their support!! Amazing!!
I spent the afternoon signing CD's - which was surprising to me because the CD's cost $25 there! Yikes! Very expensive, but it was awesome to meet so many people from all around the world and that they felt inspired by my music was humbling. All glory be to God! :)

I went to confession - remembering, that this is supposed to be a spiritual renewal for me, too - that I don't have to work every day and not be fed myself!

Wednesday night David and I met with David Vogel to rehearse some of his songs for his concerts. We had a nice chat - talk about someone going through spiritual warfare.... I hope he shares his struggles one day, because he will have a powerful story to share. Then, he took us to Dana's hotel room! WHOA! We got to hang out with Dana in her hotel room!!! Sweeeeeet!
And then I went home to sleep on the dome floor. :)

Thursday.... more catechetical session awesomeness, Mass... great fun, great worship.
Papal Arrival was in the afternoon and that was, of course, amazing. We were really close to the stage and had a great view. I was so moved by seeing him and his love of the youth, and singing the WYD theme song... brought me to tears! What a great God we have that He shepherds His people through mere men and what a great call to holiness we all have !

John Angotti's concert was in the evening. Unfortunately, David Vogel's Opera House Concert was canceled. John's concert was great. I finally met Amanda Vernon - a girl who lives about 45 minutes away from me, and yet we had to travel across the world to finally meet! We went out to dinner with John, his band, Lisa Bagladi from WLP, and Rob, WLP's Australian distributor.

Friday -
Yet another morning of 5:30 wakeup time to get to our catechetical session and I feel sick as a dog. The lack of sleep, constant running around, and lack of proper eating has gotten to me! Fortunately, because David and I have to be at the USCCB Mass the next morning super super super early, WLP put us and Dawn and Alicia in a hotel for the night, which would be closer travel for us.

We played Dana and David's concert. I got to play "We Are One Body" for Dana!! Talk about pressure...! :) David Vogel's concert didn't go so well, but maybe he'll share that story.
I was still feeling extremely tired and ill, so I didn't sing for John's concert that night. I went home to try to get some rest before the Mass in the morning.

Saturday morning was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! David and I got to do music ministry for the USCCB Mass with Steve Angrisano, Matt Maher, Jorge Rivera, Santiago, Paul Melley, and John Angotti. Matt Maher and I shared a microphone. It's true. I have pictures. :) There was a great turnout- thousands of American pilgrims. The homily was one of the best I'd heard all week. I wish I could remember the name of the presider!!! The Lord healed my voice enough just to do the Mass and then it was time to rest - almost all of my work there was done!

The music at the USCCB Mass was moving and finally geared towards youth. A lot of the music at WYD Masses was very "high Church" and hard to sing and not really youth friendly. The kids were all singing and worshipping with one voice and that was a refreshing touch to a great week.

Saturday afternoon, we walked for hours to get to Randwick for the vigil, carrying our packs and sleeping bags. We were some of the last to arrive (Dawn, David, Alicia, and I) so it seemed like deserted streets we traveled! We trampled over torn chick tracts. What a ridiculous way to evangelize... to draw cartoons of Catholic burning in hell.... Also, there were other people passing out anti-Catholic propaganda in disguise, passing out what looked like holy cards, but on the back were rants against the Church. Clever, but would the Lord use deception to lead people to the Truth? I think not.

The vigil was nice, but I was freezing and sick and people were chanting and drumming all night and I wanted to yell at them to do their praise and worship more softly! :p The Papal arrival the next day, Sunday, was amazing, because I was able to get right in front and was as close to him as anyone could possibly get as he drove by in the Popemobile! The Mass was beautiful. Adoration Saturday night was great...

An aside, everyone should check out the band Scythian. They were GREAT and I woke up just long enough to hear some awesome tunes from them.

That's pretty much it. That was our week. We tried to digest it in our pilgrimage group, but really it's going to take some time to process the effect this pilgrimage has had on all of us.... Some things are coming together slowly, but I'm still unpacking - literally and figuratively!

Well, it's 4am and I've got to play catch up at work tomorrow, even though I feel like I've been working for the past couple of weeks, as I did youth and music ministry just about every day!! :)

God bless!
Noelle

WYD Update #5: Playing at Darling Harbour and seeing old friends

G'day from inside a mall at a random 1 dollar per 20 minute computer at Darling Harbor! We just finished playing the Palm Grove gig and it went reaaally well . . . Noelle, Dawn and David sang wonderfully, John Angotti did [just] as well of course, and his drummer and bassist added so much! There was a huge crowd, including our group from Michigan, a group from Memphis (including Brian Peopsil whom I haven't seen in like 3 years) and another Michigan group . . . the support was awesome. It was a blast to perform right in the middle of Darling Harbor . . . so awesome.

We had to play at a catechetical session this morning about an hour and a half away from Palm Grove so we went all the way out there for only about 20 mintues then had to book it back to get checked in to play Palm Grove and [do the] soundcheck...so that was exciting. We play out there tomorrow morning again and then sing with John at like 6:15 at Palm Grove again.

WYD 2008 Update #4: Living Conditions in Sydney

From Noelle's sister Alicia:

Hey all!! I'm sending you an email from John Angotti's computer who graciously let us use his shower (and obviously computer) after we rehearsed music for tomorrow. It's exciting seeing all the pilgrims from all over the world! We are staying in the Sydney Olympic park showground in The Dome...where I guess gymnastics took place. It's not as bad as I thought...they didn't pack us in so there's a lot of room and just several rows of people sleeping areas. The ground was kinda uncomfy , even with the mat...but my sleeping bag was super warm so I felt bad for the people who froze all night! Luckily they did hand out sleeping bags be\cause some people didn't buy them so they literally froze. One girl in our group I saw sleeping this morning with gloves, her big coat, and a knit cap! The showers are in big semi truck-like things...not horrible but not ideal so showering here at John's hotel was amaaazing.

We have to head to Mass at the harbor now (Darling Harbor is soooo pretty...we walked around and had dinner there last night...gorgeous city).

WYD 2008 Update #3: Day Three in Sydney

We finished our first week here in Australia with a flourish last night with a beautiful Mass of about five thousand people in the Wollongong Diocese. David and I met some Syrians and played music with them before the Mass started. Two of them gave me Syrian coins. That was pretty awesome. That we are all united in the Body of Christ was a profound experience. One, when telling me about Syria said, "Oh, and we're not terorrists". I felt sad for him that he felt that he needed to say that - joke or not, there was bitterness there. JPII had a great vision in uniting the youth of the world for this event - there is NO OTHER event like it - even [in] the Olympics [there is] faithfulness to one's own country [and] competition, not unity. This event breaks down barriers and maybe one day the youth will lead our countries with the same vision of appreciating other's differences of language and culture. The Syrians taught me how to say hi in their language.

SO FUN!
Okay, but I'm going backwards... David, Dawn, Alicia and I did music for the Mass and Taize service on Friday for our group and host families. We were handed the packet of music five minutes before Mass started and I realized I only knew 3 out of about 10 songs. That was interesting! Definitely a lesson in sightreading!! But I had a blast and the Holy Spirit took care of the whole thing.

David and I went rock climbing in a wildlife park (off the trail a bit) and we had tons of fun except when I tried to play Tarzan and grabbed a vine, which broek as soon as I pulled it sending me off my balance and crashing into a rock! It was pretty funny... once the pain was gone. :)

I've met many other people from the US. Yesterday we performed at the Everything Aussie Fest and it was SO FUN!! People sang with us and clapped with us and prayed with us! I am in awe of this event and the Holy Spirit's presence among us!

I've met Latvians, Germans, Nigerians, Armenians, Saudi Arabians.. Our group played a volleyball tournament against the Saudis and lost miserably. They were intense, focused, competitive.... no girls on their team! But our team did beat the Californians, so there ya go. :) It was all good sport and all in good fun!!

Today we're going Kayaking and Surfing with our host family and David's host family. It's pretty chilly here, so we'll see how that goes. Then, tonight we will be playing another Mass for Kiama. More musical opportunites just keep coming up..

Still not sure if the Opera House will be canceled or not, but we'll still be playing Palm Grove, and a couple of concerts with John Angotti, David Vogel, Dana. And of course the USCCB Mass, I'll be singing with Steven Angrisano, John Angotti, Matt Maher, and all those guys. I am stoked. :)

Love you all - tomorrow we head into Sydney to prepare for the WYD events! God bless! Noelle

WYD 2008 Update #2: Day 2 in Sydney

This post was written by Noelle's sister Alicia.

Hellooo again! Today was a busy day!

We went this morning to Nowra to a school out there where we learned a lot about the aboriginal people...the indigenous people as they're called. They did aboriginal dancing for us outside in the COLD so i felt so sorry for the poor kids, and had speakers and things. It was pretty interesting...very similar situation to the Native Americans. One indigenous lady that spoke told us how her father was part of the "lost generation" where the government wouuld force children from their home. Very sad.

After that we went to a a wildlife park where we got to pet koala bears (Dawn and I got a picture with one named Henry!! We got to give him a little half hug too!) AND kangaroos!! We fed all the animals too so it was really exciting. One kangaroo grabbed the entire bag of food pellets from my hand and just started chowing down...I didn't feed him anymore after that lol:)Then we came back and had a Taize Mass which was interesting. Wouldn't like it all the time but it was neat!

By the way, asking someone if they're feeling peckish means 'are you hungry?' :)

AND we totally had steamed pudding. Very good. I'm going to ask my host mom Ann for the recipe!

Have a good day! It's about 8:53pm here so it's about 7 am there. The Aussie Festival is tomorrow so another busy day!

WYD 2008 update #1: Traveling to Sydney

Cheerio mates!

We're just muckin around in the outback, down here! After acquiring a bit of respite, we shall head to the church and have a holy hour with our group!

The flights were LONG, LONG, LONG. My leg swoll up to about twice it's size. It looked like I was wearing a fat suit on one leg!

We had Mass at LAX - in the middle of the airport. We saw paparrazi harrassing some movie star (recognized her, don't know who she was) so in the middle of this chaotic world descended the peace of Christ and all was hushed as the Eucharistic prayer began. It was powerful, and I realized the true nature of this PILGRIMAGE we are on.

We ran into John Angotti at LAX, too, ps.

We had a bit of an issue upon arriving in Brisbane, Au, and that was four of our group, including David and Alicia, weren't booked on our same flight. That ended up getting sorted out and the Holy Spirit was definitely at work in that our flight was delayed enough so that we all ended up arriving within 30 minutes of each other.

Once we made it to Sydney, we had about a two hour bus drive to Wollongong (ANOTHER ride... total travel time was 38 hours!) FINALLY we made it and it was dreary and rainy. Because of our delays, we missed the Bishop who came out to meet us. We had mass with the Australians and it was great. We are so excited to be here and what a great and beautiful thing it is to share unity in the Catholic Church - the Mass is the same wherever you go and I felt completely at home sharing Eucharist on this foreign land.

I'm working on my accent, by the way. And it's great. :p

Then, we met our host families. My friend Dawn and I are staying in a rainforest!!!!! Last night, we saw a kangaroo cross the road (A KANGAROO IN THE WILD!!!) I have it on video:) We also saw a wombat (giant rat, bigger than a raccoon) and a wallabee (small kangaroo-looking creature). The land here is beautiful. The wind was so high last night that it sounded like an ocean. Then when we woke up this morning and looked out the window, we saw we were on top of a mountain in the rainforest, and we could see the ocean from our view. It's all breath-takingly beautiful. God is good and His handiwork is magnificent. We had a great time visiting with our host family. I even ate salmon. Raw. That's the only thing thus far that I hope to never experience again. :)

This morning Dawn, David, Alicia, and I played Mass for our group and host families. We played with an Australian composer and his son. We had great fun. The music here is different. More on that another time. We had fun.

Following Mass, we went for a hike in the Miramurra rainforest all the way up atop a waterfall. It was like a scene out of Jurassic park, but without the scary dinosaurs. We went for a drive up to Saddleback mountain which overlooks the whole valley and ocean.... WOW, the most breathtaking site. I took some pictures but quickly became discouraged as nothing could capture the beauty. Everywhere you go, you can't help but give glory to God!!

Oh! And we went to see a blow hole in volcanic rock formation where the water comes up and spouts through the whole. We met a bunch of Nigerians here for WYD. I met the President of Nigeria's Catholic Youth Organization!

Right now, I am sitting at another host family's home (Dawn and I will be staying here in couple of days for a couple of days) They have ocean views on two sides of their home, so we've been whale watching!! We've seen a couple of whales, but they are so far away, we haven't been able to really make them out aside from the splashes they made.

I am so blessed to be on this pilgrimage. We have a holy hour shortly, so I better run. Music tomorrow and Adoration tomorrow... the Australians have been unbelievably kind and generous and allowing us to be part of their celebration has been quite an experience.

I love you all, and I'm praying for you. All of your intentions are held in my heart each day, and I pray God blesses you profoundly. Please keep us in your prayers, too!

Noelle
